Here is a list of answers to questions we regularly encounter in our adventures.

Our expert boot-fitting team travels the world over imparting our knowledge and philosophy. Here is a list of answers to questions we regularly encounter
in our adventures.

How long do you heat an insole?
4-6 minutes depending on the model used.
After I mold the insoles the toe area is often curved upward. How do I stop that from happening?
Immediately after the customer stands on the heated insoles in the Windlass position (knees slightly bent, toes up) pull/stretch the bags under the toe area to ensure that it is flat. Also, once the insoles are cooled, the toe area can be re-heated and flattened with by hand on with a flat heavy object (Any high school Math textbook will suffice).
Do I really need to post every insole?
No. Skiing is a lateral sport and demands that your entire body (all your muscles, tendons, joints, etc.) be active and engaged. A quality insole should be one that provides the proper level of support for a given customer/athlete’s foot architecture and flexibility (or lack thereof) while at the same time allowing the body to move naturallly. Sometimes that means we post, often we don't. It all depends on the foot we see.
How to install Therm-ic heat elements into an insole?
a. Trace the element on the insole to decide placement of the element
b. Cut a small 2mm x 2mm or ½” x ½” hole in the ball of the foot area of the insole to accommodate the PC board that is attached to the element. Or use the TSG hole punch to cut the hole for the insole
c. Apply contact cement to both the insole and element if needed
d. Thread the cable through the hole and stick down the element on the insole
e. Apply the top cover if desired
How to install Sidas heat elements into an insole?
a. Trace the element on the insole to decide placement f the element
b. Cut a small 1mm x 2mm or ¼”” x ½” hole behind the ball of the foot area of the insole to accommodate cable and Mylar to cable attachment. Or use the TSG hole punch to cut the hole for the insole
c. Thread the cable through the hole and stick down the element on the insole
d. Tuck the Mylar / cable attachment into the area behind the metatarsals on the bottom side of the insole. Cover with the thin strip of top cover material supplied
e. Apply the top cover if desired
Why do people need insoles?
People benefit from the use of insoles as it helps with balance and proprioception. The insole becomes an active part of the system that helps them stay connected to their footwear.
How to best line up an insole in the HD VAC Mold?
a. Use the rim of the heel cup of the impression in the HD Vac bag as the reference for inserting the insole. The rim of the heel cup impression should be symmetrical with the top edge of the heel cup on the insole.
b. The first metatarsal head aligns with first met head impression of the insole.
What is the best way to install a battery pack on the ski boot
The battery pack should be clipped onto or attached to the power strap of the boot so there is some movement in case the battery is impacted
Why does TSG ask us to create space in and around the Medial Compartment of a ski boot?
We are interested in the foot becoming active inside the ski boot and helping allow the individual to articulate their ankle to control turn shape and turn radius
What effect does ski boot alignment have to the person on snow?
It becomes easier for the individual to turn their skis with less effort. It helps them with balance and agility
What is the best way to heat up ski boots to work on them?
a. If you are dealing with trying to work on a broad area of a ski boot and it is only a single layer of plastic – hot water is most effective
b. Working on a single spot of a ski boot shell and or working on a part of the boot that has 2 layers of plastic – hot air is effective. Best solution is to heat the boot from the inside out.
Proper shell sizing – what to do we look for?
a. We look for 1.5 to 2 finger widths of space behind the heel when the foot is positioned to the outside of the shell and forward
b. Slide the foot to the back and to the outside of the shell. One finger width of space should be enough between the inside ankle/ nacvicular area and the shell.
c. Foot to the back and inside of the shell and there should be one finger width of space on the outside of the foot.
How do we measure forward lean?
We look for a “comfortable” athletic stance. Simply meaning the person we are working with can stand comfortably and not have too much pressure on the shin and or the calf.
Are ski socks important?
A good ski sock that wicks moisture from the foot can keep your feet warmer during the day. it can also prevent any chaffing between your ski and the ski boot.
Do thermal liners really work?
They keep your feet warmer than a traditional liner, but sometimes lack performance of a traditional liner system
What are the best practices around molding them?
TBD
Are foam liners complicated to make?
a. Success with foam liners is all in the preparation of the components. Foam temperature at room temperature
b. Shell work and alignment completed.
c. Limited amount of foam to enter the liner / shell.
